AI Policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

The Journal of Pharmaceutical Science (JOPHAS) establishes this policy in accordance with the Indonesian national journal accreditation guidelines, particularly the Director General of Science and Technology Decree No. 374/DST/D.D1/HM.01.01/2026 concerning the Technical Guidelines for Scientific Journal Accreditation. This policy regulates the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies by authors, editors, and reviewers to maintain transparency, confidentiality, and publication integrity.

1. Authors

No AI Authorship. AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authors must be human contributors who can take responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the published work.

Permitted Use. Authors may use AI tools to assist with language editing, grammar correction, translation, and other supporting tasks. All AI-generated outputs must be critically reviewed and verified by the authors. Authors remain fully responsible for the entire manuscript, including its data, analysis, interpretations, conclusions, and references.

Prohibited Use. AI must not be used to fabricate or falsify research data, results, images, or references; manipulate research materials in a misleading manner; or generate scientific claims and conclusions that are presented without appropriate human verification. Authors must not present AI-generated content as their own original intellectual contribution without disclosure.

Mandatory Disclosure. Authors must disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in preparing their manuscripts. An AI Use Declaration must be included before the References section, identifying the AI tool used, its version where available, its purpose, and the sections or tasks in which it was used. If no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used, authors must state: “The authors declare that no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the preparation of this manuscript.”

AI in Research Methods. When AI or machine-learning technologies form part of the research methodology, their use must be described in the Methods section with sufficient detail to support the evaluation and reproducibility of the research.

2. Editors

Confidentiality. Editors must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts, reviewer reports, unpublished research data, and all other confidential editorial materials. Such materials must not be uploaded to AI services that may disclose, retain, or use them for model training without appropriate authorization and adequate safeguards.

Limitations on AI Use. Editors may use AI for limited administrative or technical assistance, provided that confidentiality, research integrity, and editorial independence are maintained. AI must not replace the editor’s own scientific assessment or editorial judgment.

Editorial Decisions. Decisions regarding manuscript acceptance, revision, or rejection must be made by human editors based on the manuscript’s scientific merit, originality, methodological quality, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal’s scope. Editors remain fully accountable for their decisions.

Disclosure and Accountability. Editors must document material AI use that affects manuscript handling when appropriate. Suspected misuse of AI by authors or reviewers must be addressed through the journal’s established editorial and publication ethics procedures.

3. Reviewers

Prohibition of AI in Peer Review. Reviewers are prohibited from using generative AI tools to analyse, summarise, evaluate, or assess submitted manuscripts; draft or write review reports; formulate publication recommendations; or otherwise perform the substantive assessment of a manuscript using AI.

Protection of Confidentiality. Reviewers must not upload or paste submitted manuscripts, excerpts, figures, tables, research data, supplementary files, or other confidential review materials into AI applications. Manuscripts under review are confidential, and the scientific judgment expressed in a review must be the reviewer’s own independent assessment.

Reviewer Responsibility. Reviewers are fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, objectivity, and confidentiality of their review reports. JOPHAS may disregard a review that violates this policy and may suspend or remove the reviewer from its reviewer database, depending on the circumstances.

4. Policy Updates

JOPHAS may review and update this policy in response to developments in AI technology and applicable Indonesian journal accreditation regulations. Any revisions will be published on the official JOPHAS website.
