Initial Characterization of Specific and Non-Specific Parameters Based on Phytochemical Tests and Quality of Ethanol Extract of Arumanis Mango Leaves (Mangifera indica L.var. arumanis)
Abstract
Ethanol extract of mango arumanis leaves (Mangifera indica L. var. arumanis) from Probolinggo contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, phenols, saponins, and triterpenoids that have the potential to be pharmaceutical active ingredients. This laboratory research aims to conduct initial characterization of extracts through specific and non-specific parameters to ensure the quality, safety, and consistency of extracts. The sample was extracted by the maceration method using a 70% ethanol solvent. The extracts obtained were then tested for specific parameters (organoleptic and phytochemical screening) as well as non-specific parameters (drying shrinkage, specific weight, water-soluble extract and ethanol levels). The data was analyzed descriptively based on the average value of the test results. The results showed that the extract was brownish-green, smelled like mango leaves, and had a thick texture. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, phenols, and triterpenoids, while alkaloids were not detected. The drying depreciation value was 5.94%, type weight 1.007, water-soluble juice content 82.00%, and ethanol soluble juice content 88.00%. Thus, ethanol extract of arumanis mango leaves contains potential active compounds and meets non-specific quality parameters according to the Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Further research is recommended to complement the testing of other parameters such as ash content, moisture content, and biological activity tests to obtain more comprehensive extract quality standards.
